8/21/1450 ~ Conveyance (Feoffment). ~ Robert Spilman of Thaxted, 'bocher',
William STRACHEY late of same, and now of Royston, and John Bayly, hosier, to
John Spilman senior, both of Thaxted. One rood in the hamlet called Stanbroke
in Thaxted in meadow called Gretemed between meadow of said Robert Spilman,
late of Simon Saward, on south, and that of Robert Spilman on North, one head
abutting west on land of Nicholas Gace, late of William Fryday, and the other
abutting on meadow called Priouresmed, (which said Robert Spilman etc. had with
Thomas Bernard of Thaxted, deceased, of feoffment of John Hedstok, Thomas
Norton and Richard Aleyn of Thaxted). And also a piece of meadow in said
hamlet, between meadow of William Taylour, late of William Cressener, on one
part, and that of Robert Spilman, formerly of John Herry, on the other, with
one head abutting on land of said Nicholas Gace, and the other on the stream
(ripa) flowing from Thaxted towards Tyltey; (which Robert Spilman had with
Thomas Spilman and Richard Fan (deceased) of feoffment of Robert Gace, William
Fan, William Gace, Richard Dannery and Thomas Bernard). And also 1 acre of land
in said hamlet in same field, between lands of Robert Spilman, one head
abutting on stream running towards Tilty, and the other on highway from Thaxted

I Thomas Spurgeown of Walden in the County of Essex Have demised, released and
by this present Deed Confirmed to Alice, Lately wife of William Middilton,
Widow, John Nycoll, Thomas Strache and Thomas Longe of Walden aforesaid one
half acre of arable land lying in a certain field of Walden aforesaid called
Hath Feld between land lately of John Cowper on one side and land lately of
John Gardener of Brookwalden now of Thomas Holte on the other side, one Head
thereof abutting upon land lately of thomas Barker, the other Head abutting
upon land lately of Thomas Morce. Which half acre of arable oald with its
appurtenances I the aforesaid Thomas Spurgeown with William Myddilton, Robert
Mayhew, William Draper and Robert Betys now deceased lately had to us our heirs
and assignes forever by demise and Deed of confirmation of Margaret Morce,
widow, John Cowper, Thomas Rede and John Feror of Walden often mentioned as
more fully appears in a certain Deed of enfeoffment thereupon executed in our
favour. To have and to hold to the above persons to the use of Alice Myddilton.
Payment of customary services. Appointment by T. Spurgeown of Roger Grene and
will. Dyer as his attorneys to deliver to Alice Myddilton and to the other

3/5/1492/3 ~ Deed ~ Know present and future that we john
Sexten of Wymbyssh in the County of Essex , Thomas Barker , John Collewell, John
Serych and John Barker son of John Barker of the same place Have demised
enfeoffed, released any by this our present Deed confirmed to John Taylor of
Walden, the elder, John Dawncy of the hospice of his majesty the King, gentleman,
Henry Cok of Walden aforesaid and to Robert Dawncy, citizen and habyrdasscher
of London, one messuage with building with thirteen Acres and a half acre of
arable land, whether more or less lying piecemeal in Wymbyssh aforesaid. And
one garden lying in Thundyrle etc. The situations and bounds are described
precisely as in the last deed (In 3 the two acres are said to lie in Nildirfeld
not Hilderfeld) The land and garden were received from Richard Fan of Thaxstede
Bocher as shewn in the deed of Feb 2. 3 Henry VII (p.219). Payment of customary services. Appointment of

~ Deed Saffron Walden ~ Know that I Thomas Sprugeon of Walden [Saffron Walden]
n the county of Essex have demised and by this my present deed confirmed to
John Nicolls of Walden, George Nicolls of London, Gentilman, John Rutland of
Walden, George Thorne, George Thorne, Thomas STRACHYE,
John Sympson, Thomas Long, Roger Grene, John Eweyn of the same, William Newman
of Wenden in the County aforesaid and Thomas Raymond of Lytilbury [Littlebury]
in the same County, a messuage lately rebuilt by Willaim Middilton, deceased
situated in Walden [Saffron Walden] with a garden adjoining the messuage in a
place or green there called Hoggesgrene [Myddylton Place], to wit, between a
messuage formerly of Adam Tanner and lately of William Ewayn on one side and a
messuage formerly of John Parker afterwards of William Avenaunt and now of
William Brewet on the other side, one head thereof abutting on the said green
called Hoggesgrene and the other head thereof upon a messuage lately of John
Colwell of Litelbury [Littlebury] and of John Colwell of Walden Glasyer,
afterwards of the said William Middelton. Which messuage with garden adjoining
and its appurtenances I the aforesaid Thomas Spurgeon together with the said
William Middelton late of Walden, Robert Mayhewe, William Draper and Robert
Beetys late of the same, now deceased, lately had conjointly to us, our heirs
and assigns for ever, by demise and confirmation of John Bryd and Cowper of
Walden [Saffron Walden] Colermaker. And also, I the aforesaid Thomas Spurgeon
have demised and by this present deed confirmed to the aforesaid John Nicolls,
George Nicolls, John Rutland, Goerge Thorne, Thomas STRACHYE, John Sympson, Thomas Long, Roger Greme, John
Eweyn, William Newman and Thoman Raymond a tenement with buildings upon it situated
in the town of Walden [Saffron Walden] n the aforesaid place called
Hoggesgrene, to wit, between the said messuage lately of the aforesaid William
Myddelton on one side and a messuage of the said William Brewet on the other
side, one head thereof abutting upon the said green called Hoggesgrene
[Myddylton Place] and the other head abutting on a messuage formerly of John
Colwell and afterwards of the said William Middelton.Which tenement with
buildings with appurtenances, I the aforesaid Thomas Spurgeon lately had to me,
my heirs and assigns for ever by demisse and confirmation of the said John
Eweyn and Flakke, John Cowper and Robert Hyne of Walden, I, the aforesaid
Thomas Spurgeon have also demised and by this my present Deed confirmed to the
aforesaid John Nicolls, George Nicolls, John Rutland, George Thorne, Thomas STRACHYE, John

Raymond a croft of land enclosed with hedges and ditches containing four acres
of land be it more or less, formerly of Thomas Morce lying in Melfelde between
land lately of John Cowper on the eastern side and land lately of John Rose on
the western side one head thereof abutting on land lately of Edward Yonge
towards the north, the other head abutting upon the road leading from Walden
[Saffron Walden] to the Castellmelle towards the south Which Croft of land with
its appurtenances I the aforesaid Thomas Spurgeon together with the said
William Middelton, Robert Mayhewe, William Draper and Robert Beetys now
deceased lately had conjointly to us, our heirs and assigns fo ever by demise
and confirmation of John Bailly lately of Walden And further, I the aforesaid
Thomas Spurgeon have demised and by this present deed confirmed to the
aforesaid John Nicolls, George Nicolls, John Rutland, George Thorne, Thomas
Strachy, John Sympson, Thomas Long, Roger Grene, John Eweyn, William Newman and
Thomas Raymond a croft of land enclosed with hedges and ditches lying on the
said field of Walden [Saffron Walden] called the Mellefeld between land lately
of Richard Shymmyng on the side and lately of Robert Wolston called Ethonnys on
the other side, one head thereof abutting on land lately of the said John Bryd
and the other head abutting on the high road leading towards Cambridge Which
Croft of land with appurtenances I the aforesaid Thomas Spurgeon together with
the said William Middelton, Robert Mayhewe, William Draper and Robert Beetys
now deceased lately had conjointly to us, our heirs and assigns for ever by
grant and confirmation by deed of William Lamberd citizen and mercer of London
son of Thomas Lamberd late of Walden. To have and to hold etc. payment of dues.
Thereby fulfilling the last will of the said William Middelton. And further etc
(appointment of William Dyer of Walden as the attorney of Thomas Spurgeon to
deliver the above properties to John Nicolls and the other cofeoffees above

1/20/1495 ~ Deed ~ Know present and future that I, John Carter
of Walden in the County of Essex, Fyssher, being in my full and peaceable
possession, have granted, conceded and by this my present deed confirmed to
John Rutlond, Nicholas Pyrke, John Ereswell, John Nycole, Thomas Stracy,
William Bryd, John Wregge, Hugh Jacob, William Adam the elder, Abdrew Awbry,
Thomas Adam, Robert Parker, John Turnor of Walden aforesaid, Thomas Barker and
William Colwell of Wymbyssh, one acre of land lying in Wymbyssh aforesaid
called Hawkedonys acre, between Land lately of Richard Bagge now of John Taylour,
on one sidem and land called Lytell Hawkedonys lately of John Martyn, now of
John Sexteyn on the other side, one head thereof abutting upon land of Nicholas
Martyn and the other head thereof abutting upon land of Nicholas Martyn and the
other side, one head thereof abutting upon the High road called
Hawkedonestrete, leading from Wymbyssh aforesaid towards Neuport. To have and
to hold the acre of land to the above persons. Warranty. Seal. Witnesses:- John

1/29/1506 ~ Quitclaim
Deed ~ Margaret Redar of [Saffron] Walden, wid., late wife and executrix of
will of John Redar, decd., of Walden, and Nicholas Redar of Walden, son and
heir of said John Redar to John Nicholles of Walden, baker, Richard Nicolles,
citizen and baker of London, and Thomas Holden, John Boyton, Thomas Smyth,
Nicholas Rutland and Thomas Middleton, all of Walden. Right and title to
messuage in borough of Saffron Walden in a street called le Highstrete between
a tenement late of Richard Henham, now of said John Nicolles on N. and a street
called le Churchstrete on S., one head abutting on tenement of Nicholas Adam
towards E., the other on said le Highstrete towards W.; which messuage said
John Nicolles lately bought of said Margaret; and holds (with other parties
above) by feoffment of William Bryd, John Burges, William Coksey alias Harpour,

12/16/1508 ~ Deed ~ Know present and future that we Thomas Serych
of Wymbisshe in the county of Essex, John Barker son of Thomas Barker of the
same, Walter Sexton lately of the same and John Nichollls of Walden in the
County aforesaid Havedemised, conveyed and by thus our present Deed released to
Robert Smyth, Clerk, three acres and on one Rood of our arable land, whether
more or less is there in contained, as they lie dividely in the parish of
Wymbisshe aforesaid where of three acres lie together i a certain Field there
called Greate Westfield, to wit between land of Baggs on both sides, one head
there of abutting upon land lately of william Colwell towards the South and the
other head there of abutts upon land lately of William Colwell towards the
South and the other head there of abutts upon land of Baggs towards the north.

12/18/1508 ~ Deed ~ Know present and future that we William
Bryd of Walden in the County of Essex, mercer, John Turnor, Thomas Lamberd,
Roger Grene, John Boyton and John Grigge have Demised, conveyed and by this our
present Deed released to Robert Smyth, Clerk, all that acre of our arable land
lately a portion of Stucleyes lying in a certain Field of Walden aforesaid
called Byxstaple, to wit, between land of the Abbot and Convent of the
monastery of Walden on the eastern side and land of John Serych on the western
side. One head of which abutts upon Byxstaple hill towards the south and the
other head thereof abutts upon the High road leading from Walden towards
Thaxsted on the northern side. Which acre of land with appurtenances, amongst
other lands and tenements which were sometime of Thomas Stucley, we, the
aforesaid William Bryd, John Turner, Thomas Lamberd, Roger Grene, John Boyton
and John Grygge together with Robert Bradbury, gent, Robert Dauncy and Thomas
Adam now deceased, lately had conjointly to us and our heirs and assigns, by
grant and Enfeoffment of John Hynde Clerk and of the aforesaid Robert Smyth by
the name of Robert Smyth Priest . To have and to hold all the aforesaid acre of
land with appurtenances to the aforenamed Robert Smyth his heirs and assigns
forever. Payment of customary services. Warranty. Appointment of John Boyton
their cofeoffee, as their attorney to deliver possession of the land . Seals.

3/19/1517 ~ Deeds Saffron Walden ~ Know present and future
that we John Panter of Walden in the county of essex, William Bryd, Thomas
Boytopn and John Ward of the same town, have granted, conceded and by this our
present Deed confirmed to Thomas Myddylton, John Nycolls, Thomas STRACHYE the
younger, John Smyth draper, Thomas Lawe, William strachy and hugh Moyse of the
same town two acres of arable land with its appurteances lying next
powncyeswode in the parish of Walden aforesaid, to wit, between the same wood
and land of Hugh Jacob on the Southern aside and land of Richard spryng on the
northern side, one head there of abutting upon land of the said Thomas
Myddylton late of George Nycolls towards the east and the other head thereof
abbutting upon land lately of Thomas Stokmer towards the west. Which two acres
of land with appurteanceas we the aforesaid John Panter, William Bryd, Thomas
Bryd, Thomas Boyton and John Ward lately had to us our heirs and assigns by
grant and comcession of Thomas Colle, executor of the last will andtesrtament
of aforesaid Thomas Stokmer with the consent and agreement of John gardyner,
co-executor with the aforesaid Thomas Colle in the execution of the aforesaid
Will of Thomas Stokmer late of Walden, often mentioned, as more fully appears
in the same deed. To have and to hold the aforesaid two acres to Thomas
Myddylton& the other pwersons. To the use and profit of Thiomas Myddylton.

2/28/1526 ~ Know that I John Turner of Walden in the County of
Essex, yoman, have granted and by this my present deed of Indenture confirmed
to Thomas Middelton and Johanna his wife, one of my daughters, John Nicolls
Draper, John Smyth, Thomas Halydance, Richard Ereswell and Thomas Adam. All my
lands, Tenements and reversions in Walden with their appurtenances severally
which follow. To wit all those my four Tenements with appurtenaces and a Barn
and Stable as they are situated in a street there called Frosshewell hundred.
And a meadow which I purchased of one John Byrde lying next the meadow of
William Byrde called The Swanne medow. And a pasture containing three roods of
ground lying on the northern side of Howelstyle And also two pieces of land
lying in powncynshalfeld, a portion of Sobroks which I purchased of George
Nycolle. And two pieces of land lying in a field called whitestreate on the
road leading from Walden towards saint Aylot on the northern side. And another
side abutts upon land of the Abbey and Convent of Walden and upon lands of Richard
Ereswell aforesaid and of Jenyn towards the South. Also the reversion of a
Tenement with appurtenances in Frosshewelhundred in whcih William Lownds now
dwells when the said reversion happens after the decease of Katherine Archer
now a tenant thereof for the term of her life. To have and to hold etc. Payment
of dues. To the use service and profit of me the aforesaid John Turner and my
assigns for the term of my life. And after my decease to the use service and
profit of the heirs and assigns of Johanna for ever. Warranty. Seals of either

12/31/1526 ~ Deed ~ Know present and futre that we William
Byrd, John Turnour, Thomas Lamberd, Roger Grene and John Grygge have granted,
conceded and by this present Deed of Identure confirmed to John Benne, John
Warde, Thomas Longe, Nicholos Turland, Thomas Smyth, Thomas Middelton, Thomas
Byrd, Thomas STRACHIE. Thomas Albery, Thomas Marten, Richard Ereswell. William
Malen, William Ronham, John Smyth , John Mayer, Ralph Smythman, Thomas Pole,
John Sexy, John Boyton, John Barker, John Serich and Thomas Turtell. All those
our Three acres and one Rood of Land with appurtenances in Walden in the County
of Essex in Exchange for Three acres and three Roods of land with appurtenaces
in same town, of the same John Benne and all the others his cofeoffes,on the
reverse of these presents defined and bounded and for the part of these
presents executed by the same John Benne and all his cofeooffees before named
and remaining in our possession containing the grant and concession to us
thereof in exchange for the aforesaidour Three acres and one rood of land. Of
which Three acres and Rood, Two acres and three Roods lie together in a certain
field called Whithell between land pf Richard Baron Gentleman on the southern
side, one head thereof abutting upon land of Thomas Adam, And the other Head
upon land lately of Henry Cokke. And one half acre lies in a certain Filed
called the Norhtendfield, between land called the Almes house lands on the
northern side and land of George Warman on the otherside, one head thereof abutting upon the
road called Cambregway towards the east. And the other head upon land of the
aforsaid George. Which three acres and one Rood of land with appurtenances
amongst other lands and Tenements, we, the aforesaid William Byrd, John Turnor,
Thomas Lambard, Roger Grene and John together with others now deceased, had to
us and our heirs To the use of me the aforesaid William Byrd, my heirs and
assigns, by grant and enfeoffment of John Hynde Robert Smyth, Clerks, as more
fully appears by their deed therupon executed in our favour the Date of which
is at Walden aforesaid on the first day of August in the twelfth year of the
reign of king Henry the Seventh. To have and to hold all the aforesaid three
acres and one rood of our land in Exchange as is before mentioned to the aforesaid
John Benne and the other persons as above. Payment of customery services. To
the same intention and use to which the same John Benne and the rest of his
cofeoffees were in any manner possessed of and in the aforesaid Three acres and
Three Roods conceded to us in Exchanges as is before mentioned. Sealed by
either party. Given at Walden. Endorsement to the Foregoing deed .:-The Bounds
and abuttment of the threeacres and three Roods of land conceded in Exchange
for lands within defined between the within named persons.Firstly: one acre
lies in Litilwalden feld next land of william STRACHIE on the western side and
land of the within named William Byrd on the other side, one head abutting upon
Lytelwalden Way and the other Head upon land of the same Wiliam Stewcleys. And
one acre and one rood lies in a ceertain Close of the same William Byrd in
Holmerfeld between land of John on the south and the residue of the same Close on the
otherside. And one acre and a half called Constables lond lies in a certain Field
called the Pery between land of the aforesaid John Wenham on the northern side
and a lane leading from Walden towards Holmercros on the other side. Another
endorsement to the above :- A dede of exchange for 11 acrys& 111rods on
Whythill feld & di acre in Northerndfeld in a gardyn called Makyns (or
Malyns) gardyn in Walden.
6/6/1528 ~ Know that we John Clerk and Elizabeth his wife one
of the daughters and heirs of Robert Cleydon cordwayner deceased Thomas Marten
of Walden in the county of Essex, Thomas STRACHIE the younger, Thomas Bryd,
Richard Erswell and John Colwell have conveyed and by this our present deed
confirmed to Robert Joce, William Malyn, William Strachy, John Warde, John Sexe
and Nicholas Smyth all that our messuage or tenement with shops and a garden
belonging to or adjoining the messuage, situated in the town of Walden, lately
of Robert Cleydon aforesaid and previously of John pelham late Citizen and
mercer of London. Which messuage or tenement and other premises we lately had
amongest other lands to the use of Elizabeth aforesaid and her heirs,
conjointly with William Barker deceased by grant and enfeoffment of John
Erswell of Walden, Grocer, John Sexy of the same Smyth, William Humfrey,
Richard Harvy of the same and Robert Higham of Shuddy campes in the County of
Cambridge as fully appears by a deed thereupon made in our favour the date of
which is September the ninth in the sixth year of the reign of King Henry the
eighth. To have and to hold all that messuage or tenement and other premises to
Robert Joce, William Malyn, William Strachy, John Warde, John Sexe and Nicholas
Smyth aforesaid their heirs and assigns to the use and profit of the said
Robert Joce. Payment of customary services. With the condition that if Robert
Joce shall pay John and Elizabeth Clerk twenty six pounds, if demanded, in the
manner specified, that then this agreement shall be null and void and then it
shall be lawful for John Clerk, Elizabeth and the others to reenter the
premisses. Further John Clerk Elizabeth and the others to reenter the
premisses. Further John Clerk and the others appoint John Gyva(sic) senior as
their attorney to carry out the provisions of this agreement. Sealing of

~ Know that we Thomas Middylton of Walden in the county of Essex mercer and
Ralph Smythman of the same twon Baker have demised conveyed and by this our
present Deed confirmed to Margaret lawe of Walden widow, lately wife and
executrix of Thomas Lawe deceased, to Richard Hamond of Depden in the said
county, yoman, Thomas Byrd of Walden Mercer, William Strachy of the same Draper
and Nicholas Aldebury of the same, singleman, two acres of our arable land with
its appurtenances dividedly and conjointly in a Field of Walden called
Lymehillfeilde, of which one acre lies there enclosed with hedges and ditches,
to wit, between land lately of Henry Coke on one side and land sometime of
Thomas Heyns otherwise called Walden, on the other side One head thereof
abutting upon land lately of John Gardiner towards the South and the other head
thereof abutting upon the highroad leading towards Foulslow bridge. And the
other acre of land thereof lies there between land lately of Thomas Webbe on
one side, and land lately of John Runham on the other side, one head of which
abutts upon land lately of thomas Heyns and the other head thereof abutts upon
the high road aforesaid. Which two acres of land with their appurtenances We
the aforesaid Thomas Middleton and Ralph Smithman lately had conjointly, to us

Sexe and Nicholas Smyth have demised and by this our present deed of Indenture
confirmed to Alan Chapman, Valet of the Guard of the King's majesty, John
Pomfert, Thomas STRACHIE the younger, William Middelton, Thomas Ereswell, John
Lawe and William Chapman, son of the afroesaid Alan, All that our Tenement or
messuage with Shops and Stables at the back of the same messuage also with a
garden facing to the same messuage or now appertaining together with all and
singular their appurtenances. Excepting however and always reserving to us, our
heirs and assigns to the use of me Robert Joce my heirs and assings, one shop
with upper rooms built over it, part of the foregoing, as the same Shop is
situated next the messuage on the eastern side and a messauge of William Adam
in which Robert Sadler now resides of the other side. The northern head thereof
abutting upon the market called the Crone Market in Walden in the County of Essex. And the other head abutting upon a portion of the
same messuage called the Kechyn. And the same Shop contains in length on the
northern Head towords the market aforesaid twenty three feet ten inches and a
half by measure. And at the other head near the kitchen aforesaid, twenty five
feet. And in breadth eleven feet and a half full(?)next the kitchen aforesaid.
And the messuage is situated in Walden between the shop previously reserved on
the western side and the market aforesaid opposite the messuage of William STRACHIE
on the other side . And the garden aforesaid lies between Helstrete on the
Southern side and a lane leading straight from the messuage of me William Malym
aforesaid to the Chesemarket, which garden is now in a part built over by John
Danbury. And the stables aforesaid lie at the back of the messuage afresaid.
Which messuage and the other premisses with their appurtenances were at one
time of Robert Cleydon and previously of John Pelham. And we obtained them, to
us and our heirs, to the use me Robert Joyce aforesaid, my heirs and assigns,
both by grant and enfeoffment by a deed of Indenture Dated the sixth day of
June , in the twentieth year of the reign of the present king executed in our
favour by John Clerk and Elizebeth his wife, one of the daughters and heirs of
the Robert Cleydon, Cordwarner, Thomas Marton, Thomas Strachy, Thomas Bryd,
Richard Ereswell and john Colwell as well as by a fine thereon levied in the
court of our lord the king at Westminister in the fortnight from st. Hilary's
day in the aforesaid year of the king aforesaid in the presence of Robert
Brudenell, Richard Broke, Anthony Fitzherbert, Thomas Englefeld and William
Shelly between us as plaintiffs, and the aforesaid John Clerk and Elizebeth his

present Deed shall come John Danbury of Walden in the County of Essex,
greeting. Whereas Rober Joce, William Malen, William STRACHIE, John Warde, John
Sexe and Nicholas Smyth were lately possessed of their estate as in fee of and
in a messuage or tenement with certain shops and stables opposite or at the
back of the same messuage also in a Garden belonging to the same messuage with
all and singular their appurtenances, in walden aforesaid, sometime Sulgraves
and previously Cleydons. And thus possessed thereof, in performance of a
certain sale and bargain made between the said Robert and as the aforesaid John
Danbury, the above mentioned Robert Joce, William Malen, William STRACHIE, John
Warde, John Sexe and Nicholas Smythe by a certain Deed of theirs the date of
which is at Walden the tenth day of June in the twenty first year of the reign
of the presnt King Enfeoffed Alan Chapman Yeoman of the Guard of the said King,
john Pomfret, Thomas STRACHIE William Midelton, Thomas Ereswell, John Lawe and
william chapman son of the aforesaid Alan in the aforesaid messuage shops,
stables and Garden with all there appurtenances. Excepting one shop with

the said deed of indenture, and entirely reserved to the aforesaid Robert Joce,

heirs quit claimed to Thomas Marten, Richard Alfeld, Thomas Halydaunce,

younger to the use and profit of John Danbury our entire right claim title and
interest in that messuage or Tenement with all Shops, Stables and a garden

Pomferts the younger Three acres of pasture otherwise meadowe called Reves
mede, whether more or less, situated,lying and being in the town and parish of
Wymbysh in the County of Essex aforesaid, between lands lately of William
Collwell on either side. One head thereof abutting upon Land of the aforesaid
William Collwell towards the south and east, the other head abutting upon the
High road leading Newport towards the North and west. Which three acres of pasture aforersaid I

cofeoffees above named, called the Almeshowselond on the northern side and
lands of Richard Baron Gentleman on the southern side one head abutting on land
of Thomas Adam and the other head on lands lately of Henry Cocke. And one half
acre lies in a field called the Northe endefyld between land called the
Almeshowselond on the northern side and land of George Varman on the other
side, one head thereof abutting upon the road called Cambrydgewey towards the
east and the other head upon land of the aforesaid George Warman. Which Three
acres and one rood of land with appurtenances we the aforesaid John Benne,

~ To all Christain people whom this present shall reach, John Lawe of Wallden
in the county of Essex, Haberadassher, Greeting. Thereas the most mighty and
exclellent prince our lord Edward the Sixth, by the grace of God King of
England, France & Ireland defender of the faith, and on earth supreme, head
of the Church of England and Ireland, by the advice of his councillors, by his
letters patent bearing date, at Westmibster, the third day of August in the
third Year of his Reign, amongst other matters, in return for a certain sum of
money well and faithfully paid into the hands of the treasurer of his crown
court of Augmentation and Reversion, to its use, by certain John Smyth and
William Strachy, granted and conceded to the aforesaid John Smyth and William
Strachy, their heirs and assigns, all those lands whatsoever with
appurtenances, then and now in the occupation and tenure of Thomas Tyrtell,
lying and being in the fields of Wallden in the said Country of Essex, to wit,
two Acres of arable land whether more less, lying next the Pestell Dyches on
one side and Land of Thomas Tyrtell on the other side, one head abutting upon
the house of George Everhed towards the east, the other head abutting upon the

Thomas Tyrtell, his heirs and executors to be thereof acquitted and exonerated
by these presents have conveyed, sold, enfeoffed, bargained and by this my

the same twon on the other part witnesseth that the said John and Richard with
the consent of Wyllyam Strache treasurer and Thomas Ereswell & Robard
Halfhed chamberlains of the town have lt to the said Robard Halfhed noe
chamberlain, two acres of arable land lying in the fields of Walden called
Coppyd Bowshfeld, by the land of the said Robard Halfhed onthe north and the
land of the manor of Westley towards the west, one head abutting upon the land
of John Smyth the elder , towards the east and the other head abuting on the
way leading from the windmill towards Westley. For 20 years at 4 shillings per annum
if it be asked by the master and keepers of the Almshouse

the said John Smyth junior a tenement with a garden adjoining and a close or
pasture called Besell Ditches. And the tenement lies in a street called
Cockstole end [Cuckingstool End] between the tenement of the said William STRACHIE
on the one side and the pett called Cockstole pett on the other side one head
abutting on the said close and the other upon the high way leading to London.

[Saffron Walden] on the one part and James Goddyng of the same town on the
other part Witnesseth that the said John & Richard with the consent of
William STRACHIE treasurer and Thomas Erswell & Robert Halfhed chamberlains
have let to the said James Goddyng a tenement & 3 acres of land lying in
the town and fields of Walden [Saffron Walden], Whereof the tenement is in the
street called Cukstol ende [Cuckingstool End] between the tenement of Thomas
Archer south and the tenement of Thomas Byrd north, one head abutting on the said

hundred marks paid down by the said George do hereby sell him the said messuage
and tenements on the east side adjoining late in the tenure and occupation of

one part and William Smyth of the same town, gentleman on the other part
Witnesse the that the said John and Thomas with the consent of Thomas Martyn,
treasurer, Mathew Ronde and John Swallow chamberlains of the town have let to
the said William Smyth a tenement in Cuckstole end [Cuckingstool End] with a
garden adjoining and a close or pasture called Besell ditches. The tenement
lies in Cuckstole and between the tenement of Roger Bybbye on the one side and
a pit called Coockstoole pytt on the other side, one head abutting on the said

present writing shall reach William STRACHIE senior of Walden [Saffron Walden]
in the County of Essex, draper, Thomas Martynn, Thomas Harrydance and John
Pomfrete of the same town and county, greeting. Whereas we the aforesaid
William STRACHIE senior, Thomas Harrydance and John Pomfrete, with other
persons now deceased were enfeoffed, to us and our heirs for ever, in a
Tenement with buildings situated on the east side of a street of Walden
[Saffron Walden]called the High Streat otherwise called the Cukstole end [Cuckingstool
End], sometime of Simon Tyler, afterwards of John Rutland as appears more fully

in hand satisfied and paid to me Oliver aforesaid by George Nicolls of Walden
in the County of Essex esquire and Thomas Nicolls his brother wherewith I
acknowledge myself to be fully satisfied and paid and the said George and
Thomas, their heirs executors and administrators to be fully acquitted and
exonerated by these presents as well as for various other causes and
considerations specially moving me, Oliver aforesaid, in this matter Have
bargained sold and by this my present writing confirmed to the aforesaid George
and Thomas and the heirs and assigns of the afforesaid George All those my
three shops lying and being in the market of Walden in a lane there commonly

and truly to me the aforesaid Henry Halfhed in hand paid by one George Woodhall
and Christopher Byrde now masters of the Almshouse of Walden aforesaid, Which
sum of twenty one pounds is a portion of a Hundred Marks of lawful money of

and Christopher Byrde gentleman his brother of the K. Edward VI. Almshouse of
Walden [Saffron Walden] on the one part and John Deane of the same town,
shoemaker, on the other part. Witnesseth that the said James and Christopher with
the consent of John STRACHIE treasurer and of Henry Brampton and George Lawe,
chamberlains of the town, and in consideration of the surrender by John Deane

deceased as by their deed of Indenture dated the eighteenth day of January in
the fourth and fifth years of the reigns of the late King and Queen Phillip and
Mary more fully appears or by the deed of confirmation of John Walehead Clerk
and School master of Walden and of James Broughton of the same town, clerk, or
by the last will of Joan Middelton, late of Walden, deceased, as more fully
appears by their deeds thereupon executed in our favour. To have and to hold
all the singular the meassuages, lands, tenements and hereditaments aforesaid
and the other premisses with all the singular their appurtenances (with the

assigns towards the better upkeep of the poor of the Almshouse of Walden, for
ever, as holders of the theif lords of the fee by services formerly thereunto

cordewainer on the other parte Witnesseth that the said James Woodhall and
Christopher Byrde With the assent and consente of John STRACHIE Treasorer of
the towne of Walden aforesaid Henry Brampton and George Lawe chamberlaines of
the same towne, have demised graunted betaken and to ferme letten and by these
presents doe demise graunte betake and to ferme let unto the said George
Tydswell All that Shopp and one longe Sollar nowe in the tenure and occupation
of the sai George Tydswell, scituate and beinge in Walden aforesaid in the
market place there, in a streat commonlie called the Tanners Rowe, whereof the
said Shopp is scituate and beinge betwene the Shopp nowe in the Tenure or
occupation of Roger Bancks on the one part and the shopp nowein the tenure or
occupation of John Metcalfe on the other part, one head thereof abutteth upon
the streate aforesaid towards the north, And the said soller is scituate and
builded over three shopps, that is to saie the shopp nowe in the tenure or occupation

tharchangell by equall and even portions or within Fourtene daies next after

the shop and soller when necessary and agrees that he will not without leave in
writing part with any portion of the premises, in case of default wherein or of
arrears in the yearly payment of more than one month this lease to be void. The

~ Indenture of lease between John Swallow, tresurer of the town of Walden and
keeper of the Almhouse of K. Edward V1 and Anthony Pennystone his part brother
on the one part and James Pennystone of Walden on the other part witnesseth
that the said John and Antony with the consent of Nicholos Parker and Tobias
Langham chamberlains of the town let to the said James Pennystone two closes of
arable land in the fields of Walden. One of them now in the occupation af
Anthony Pennystone containing one acre at or neara field called St. John's
Houlde between the land of John Lawe on the north and the land of the widow
Gammeg on the south, the east head abutting on the highway and the west upon
the land of William Adam Draper. The other close containing 3 roods now in the
occupation of Alice Wilbrowe, widow, between the meadow called Longe meade on
the one side and the way leading from Walden to litle chaseway leading into
Longemead on the south and the other head abutting on the land sometime of John
STRACHEY towards the north. For 20 years at 12s. 8d. per ann.
6/8/1603 ~ This Indenture made the eighte day of June in the
yeere of our lorde God one thousand six hundred and three, and in the First
yeere of the raigne of our most gracious soveraigne Lorde James, by the grace
of God Kinge of Inglond Scotlonde Fraunce and Irelande defendor of the fayth
etc Betweene Johane Mountford of Radwinter alias Rodwinter in the countie of
Essex wydowe late wyeff of Simon Mountford late of Radwinter aforesaid
gentleman decessed & Simon Mountford of Radwinter aforesaide gentleman sonne
and heire of the aforesaide Simon and Johane on thone parte And William Cowle
of Walden in the countie of Essex aforesaid maultster on thother parte
Witesseth they the saide Johane and Simon Mountford for and Inconsideration of
the some of Fower score and Fyve pounds of lawful mony of Inglonde to them the
saide Johane and simon and thensealinge and deliverie hereof by the saide
William Cowle well and truly satisfied contented and paide whereof they the
saide Johane and Simon doen acknowledge the receypte and thereof and of everie
parte and parcell thereof doen and eyther of them doth acquite exonerate and
for ever discharge the saide william Cowle his heires executors administrators
and assignes & everie of them by thes presents as also for divers other good
causes & considerations them the saide Johane and Simon and eyther of them
therunto especiallie movinge Haven graunted aliened bargayned sould enfeoffed
and confirmed & by thes presents doen fully cleerly and absolutlie graunt
aliene bargayne sell enfeoff and confirme to the saide William Cowle his heires
and assignes for ever without any manner mortgage condition reentrie or other
redemption one close of pasture grounde with thappurtenances conteyninge by
estimation one acre more or less together with a certain house or Sheep coote
and all other the houses edifices and buildings whatsoever now standinge and
beinge in and uppon the said close with ther and everie their appurtenances
scituate lyinge and beinge in the parish of Walden aforesaide the one head
thereof abutteth upon a lane in Walden aforesaide leading from cuckstolend to a
lane ther called Longelane on the north thother head abutteth uppon the land of
Nicholas Ereswel on the sowth And also two other poces ofland conteyninge by
estimation three acres with their appurtenances lyinge in Walden afozesaid, one
of them at thende of the other, the one of them abuttinge uppon a lane called
burrow lane and the other abbuttinge uppon a lane leadinge from the upper end
of the streate in Walden aforesaide called Cuckstolend unto a lane there called
Longelane All which premisses late were the lands and Tenements of one Agens STRACHIE
of Walden aforesaid widow decessed and were devised by the said Agens in or by
her last will & Testamente to the saide johane, as in and by her saide last
will and testament bearing date the eight day of october in the yeere of our
lorde god one thousand five hundred sixtie one more at lardge it doth and may

11/10/1608 ~ Indenture of lease between George Nicolls of
Walden esquire, Thomas Adam gent, Thomas Turner senior mercer, Thomas Marten,
Rooke Johnson, Richard Jeppes and Andrew Birde, feoffees of the property of the
Almshouse on the one part and Thomas Willowes of Walden yeoman on the other
part witnesseth that the said George Nicolls and the other cofeoffees with the
consent of Nicholas Browne now treasurer, Richard Burrowe and Thomas Pamflinge,
chamberlains of the said town and of Thomas Adam now master of the said
Alsmhouses and Thomas Crofte Notary public, his part brother, have let to the
said Thomas Willowes two pieces of freehold land in Walden now in the
occupation of the said Thomas Willowes, that is to say, an enclosure of meadow
ground containing 3 acres in Sewers ende between land of William STRACHIE on
one side and a piece of ground now in the occupation of the said Thomas
Willowes in part and the ground of the Bishop of Peterborough in part on the
other side, one head abutting on land there leading to Tiptofts gate and the
other head upon the round of Jeffery Tanner (as in the right of his wife) And
another piece of enclosed meadow ground containing 2 acres 1 rood also lying in
Sewers ende between the ground of Jeffery Tanner on the one side and the ground
of the said Bishop on the other side, one head abutting upon the piece
before-mentioned and the other head upon the highway. For 20 years at £3.6.8

~ An Indenture made February 3. 9th James I. Between George Nicolls of walden
gentleman son and heir of George Nicolls Esquir deceased and samuel codd
citizedn and grocer of London and Sussan his wife, caughter of G. Nicolls the
son, of the one part and william Nightingale of walden, the elder, gent, and
John Adams of lyhton, cambs. on the other part witnesseth: that the said samuel
& Susan in performance of an order of the court of chancery on a suit
between G. Nicolls the son palintiff and s. Codd defendant touching the
assurance ofthe Messuages, tenements and land herefter detailed have granted
and confirmed the same to W. Nightingle and John Adams as follows (1) A rssuage
in high street lately occupid by Nicholas wathe doctor of phisicke deceased,
now by Thoomas Swanne (2) A garden belonging thereto occupidd by the same (3)
Two acres of land enclosed in parcels called scotts and lewsons abutting to the
north upon thitestreete lane (4) A maessuage at Cookstoolend (5) A close of
land belonging thereto of 2 acres in the occupation of leonard Turner and
Nicholas Wrighte (6) Two acres enclosed, one head abutting on Burrowe lane and
stretching on the south upon land sometime Lyons (7) Three acres of pasture
between land lateof one STRACHEY and the grouhd beonbing to Tiptotes heretofore
in the occupation of one william Swallowe (8) Two acres encolsed between the
land late of the said STRACHEY and the land sometime Hubbards (9) One acre by
Whitestreete land called a hedland acre sometime the inheritance of one
Brampton (10) Three acres at Uterdance alias Usterdance sometime the
inheritance of one williamson, one head abutting on Cloes lane (11) Three acres
in two small closes at a place called the Maye pole between which is a lane
leading towards Newport (12) One acre enclosed Called the Harpe abutting upon
the common Road leading to Newport. All which messuages etc. were the property
of G. Nicolls the father or son and were granted by them to the said Susan
while the was sole and to Thomas Fulkes deceased upon condition of re entry by
the two Georges on paypment of £216.13. 4d. (see last deed) which £ 216.13.4.
has not been paid but was brought into the said Court and disposed of to the
benefit of the said Samuel & Susan. To have and to hold to William
Nightingale and J. Adam, etc. Samuel Codd appoints Anndrew Bride gentleman and
John Sharpe gent, both of Walden as his attorneys. Signed by G. Nycolls,

7/28/1613 ~ Conveyance (Feoffment) for a certain sum of money. Timothy Owen, maltster, to Thomas Adam esq.;
of Walden. 2 acres of land in Walden in Funtlo Shott next Smalebridge Field
between the lands of the Earl of Suffolk formerly in occupation of Christopher
Bird gent., & that late of William Adam, deceased., & now of Thomas
Adam, abutting on the king's highway from Walden to Sewards End; & all the
freehold part of a close at Sherehill in Walden, lying between the land late of
William STRACHEY, deceased., & now of Thomas Adam, & that of John
Gyver, & abutting on the king's highway from Walden to Wimbish. (Purchased.
of Thomas Hedge). To hold of the Chief Lord of the Fee.

seaven and Fortith Betwene William Byrd Docter of the Civill Law, George

aforesaied Esquier, William STRACHIE gentlemen , Thomas Turner, mercer , Thomas
Byrd & George Byrd, gentlemen, George Law, Ralphe Harrison, Jonas Fenning,
Thomas Swallow son of John Swallowe late of Walden deceased, And Henry Leader
of Walden aforesaid mercer Feoffees of & in the shoppe hereunder demised
thissues & profitts wheareof are to be expended & bestowed in and uppon
the poor persons in the Almeshowse of king Edward the Sixt in Walden aforesaied
on the one parte. And Edward Carter of Thaxsted in the same Countie of Essex
butcher on the other part Witnesseth that the saied William Byrd doctor of the
Civill Law And other the sayed Cofeoffees with the full assent consent &
Agreement of Richard Burrow now Tresorer of the saied towne of Walden Richard
Plomer and Edward Leader Chamberlains of the same Towne, And of John Wyat now
master or keeper of the saied Almeshowse in Walden aforesaied And John Meriton
his parte brother Haven demised betaken & to ferme letten And by theise
presents doen demise betake & to ferme lett unto the saied Edward Carter.
All that their saied shopp with thappurtenances as it is now in the tenure or occupation
of the saied Edward Carter scituat in Walden aforesaied in the butchery Row
their, betwene the saied Butcherie Row north And the waye or Lane Leading
towards the Poultrie hill south One hed Abutteth uppon the Markett place of
Walden aforesaid East And the other hed Abutteth uppon the shopp of the Right
honorable the Earle of Suffolk West. To have and to hould the saied shopp with
thappurtenances to the saied Edward Carter his executors or assignes From the
feast of St.Michaell tharchangell last past before the date hereof untill the
Full end & terme of Twentie Years from thence next following Fullie to be
complete and ended Yeldinge & paying therefore yearly during the saied
terme unto the saied William Byrd docter of the Civill Law And the other Cofeoffees
their heires and assignes Thirtie shillings of lawfull Inglyshe money. At two
usuall feasts or Termes in the yeare (that is to saie) At the feast of the
Annunciation of the Virgin Marie And St. Michaell tharchangell At or in the
Almeshouse of king Edward the sixt scituat in Walden aforesaied in the hall
their by even & equall portions. And the sayed William Byrd & the other
cofeoffees grant that such payment to the master or a brother shall be a
sufficient discharge. And Edward Carter covenants that within six month he will
put in good repair the shop and keep it so during the term and deliver it in
good condition at the end of the lease. If the said conditions are not
fulfilled or if Edward Carter shall without special license in writing part
with any portion of the premises that then this Lease shall be void . Each
party had put their seal to the copy of this Indenture handed over to the other
party.
4/29/1614 ~ Know that we George Nicolls of Walden in the
county of Essex Esquire and Thomas Adam of Walden Esquire have granted and by
this our present Deed confirmed to John Sharpe, gentleman and William Runham
(1) All that Capital messuage with a garden adjoining, Six tenements belonging
to and adjoining the same messuage with their appurtenances. Of which three are
situated on the west of the said messuage and three are situated and lie
together on the eastern side in the town of Walden in a street there called
Danells lane or Fullers streat (2) Seven tenements formerly of John Hunt
situated and lying conjoinedly in a street of the aforesaid town called
Gowldestreat (3) One other tenement situated in the same street on the other
side of the same street next a tenement lately of Thomas Shillinge and so on as
in preceding deed of 25 Elizabeth except that in (9) the names (Sexten &
Rishardson) of the occupiers are omitted, in (24) the field is called le
Myllfeild (32) is written Leystreate: all other clauses precisely as before up
to (45) And further we have granted and by this our present deed confirmed to
the aforesaid John Sharpe gentleman and William Robham all and singular other
our messuages, lands, tenements, rents, reversions, services and other all and
singular our hereditaments whatsoever situated, lying and existing in the
parishes and fields of Wymbishe, Thaxted, Thunderlie and Walden aforesaid in
the County aforesaid which we or any of us, with others deceased had by deed of
confirmation of William STRACHIE the elder, James Wodall, Thomas Harridaunce,
Richard Goodwyn, Thomas Marten, John Pomfrett, John Tottenham, Thomas Pomfrett,
William Boyton, Anthony Calton, Thomas Nicolls, William Calton and John Bateman
and of Thomas Holland of Wymbishe in the County of Essex yeoman, as more fully
appears by their deed thereupon executed to us George Nicolls esquire and
Thomas Adam esquire with other now deceased, bearing date the seventeenth day
of September A.D. 1582. To have and to hold etc. to the aforesaid John Sharpe
gentleman and William Runham to the sole and proper use of aforesaid J. Sharpe
and W. Rubham for the better upkeep and maintenance of the poor of the
Almshouse of Walden. Under the condition that the said J. Sharpe and W. Runham
before the 24th day of June next following after the date of these presents
shall grant convey and confirm to William Bird D.C.L. Edward Woodall esquire
and 33 other (for the names see Latin deed) all the singular the property above
recited to their use and profit and for the better upkeep of the poor of the
Almshouse of Walden. And the aforesaid W. Bird D.C.L., Edward Woodall and the
other persons whose names are contained in the list of trustees above, covenant
that at any time in the future when it shall be necessary they will execute all
necessary documents for the conveyance of the above mentioned property to 24
persons of good name and report for the use and purpose aforesaid and for the
upkeep and maintenance of the poor in the Almshouse. Warranty. Seals. Endorsed . Seizon and quiet possession
delivered by the two ould Feoffees, Georg Nicolls Esqr. and Thomas Adam Esquier
to the within named John Sharpe & William Runham to the uses within
mentioned & conteyned in the presence of us.

3/20/1621 ~ Indenture of lease between Sir William Birde, knt,
Edmund Woodhall esq, Thomas Adam esq,Thomas Henshawe gentleman and other
feoffees of the k.Edw. VI Almshouse in Walden on the one part and Nicholas
Vipon of Walden, inhoulder on the other part Witnesseth that the said
coffoffees of the Almshouse and Thomas Baron, chamberlains of the rown have let
to the said Nicholas Vipon two closes of arable land in the fields of Walden
one of them, containing one acre enclosed with hedges and ditches now in the
occupation of Nicholas Vipon two closes of arable land in the fields of Walden
one of them, containing one acre enclosed with hedges and ditches now in the
occupation of Nicholas Vipon lying at or near a field xalled St.Johns Hold
between the lands of Thomas Lawe onthe north and the lands of William Young on
the osuth, the easdt head abutting upon the high way and the west head on the
land of Thomas Adam,esq.Aand the other close containing there roods is also in
the occupation of Nicholas Vipon and lies between the meadow called Longe Mead
on the one sideand the way leading to Little Walden on the other side and
abutts upon the lands sometime of John STRACHEY and now of Thomas Adam Esq
towards the north.For 20 Years at 20s per annum.(11s.6d. per acre).
3/30/1624 ~ Indictment ~ CERTIFICATE by John eldred and Jeff. Lengley, bailiffs
and justices of the pece of the anckent Borough and Town of Colchester that
Thomas STRACHIE butcher and John pilgrym chairmaker, both of this town, are
very lew2d, idle and dissolute persons; struchle hath continued a common thief
and pilferor by the space of 5 years and hath been twice branded on the hand
for felony, and pilgrym hath been twice in our Caol on vehoment suspicion of
felony, and on may misdemeanours so as they have "inured" themselves
to such an idle course of life as they cannot betake themselves to any honest
vocation, whoreby to maintain them with their labour; and therefore the common
Gaol or House of correction is fittest for them; for they have often discharged
them and especially STRACHIE out of the House of Ciorection and Gaol on their
faithful promiss to betake thamselves to a new course of life, yet no
alteration or amendment is found, but rather worse and worse. Signatures of the
